The SFPA’s library belongs to the group of the so-called special libraries. Within the more than fifteen years of its history in the field of both domestic and foreign policy the SFPA staff members established interesting contacts with their colleagues in partner institutions. One of the results of numerous visits and conferences or other expert work is also the library of the SFPA.
Library's resources consist of up to three thousand books and other materials. Many of them are unique, not to be found in any other Slovak library. Slovak, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, German, Ukrainian, Russian, English, French, Spanish and some other language publications can be found in the library. The library's book stock icludes scholarly publications (monographs, periodicals, electronic documents) and is divided into forty-eight topical categories, such as Security, Europe, the European Union, Globalisation, Human Rights, International organizations, Slovakia, Terrorism, Environment etc. After negative experience with not getting the loaned documents returned, the library abandoned the book lending system. The SFPA members can study the documents in the library and make copies of parts of them in the case of need. The book stock also consists of publications published by the SFPA – the periodical Listy SFPA and later Zahraničná politika and The International Issues, yearbooks, monographs and annual reports. A special valuable part of the library is the Pavol Lukáč Library, a SFPA colleague who passed away.
The SFPA library can be seen as a living library from two perspectives. Firstly, it is the traditional meaning of the phrase living library that means the library is constantly gaining new publications and eliminating the multiplicities so that her specialized, yet rich book stock can serve the daily visitors. The true fulfilling of the label living library comes when do you not only look for the literature, but also for a scholarly advice as well. The SFPA analysts are thanks to their rich theoretical knowledge and years of practical experience competent to provide a qualified advice or consultation about specific topics within the 5 research programs (http://www.sfpa.sk/en/programy/RC_SFPA/vyskumne-programy/).
The online list of the books compiled in an MS Excel sheet. The electronic version of the library's catalogue is suitable just to get an overview about library or occasionally to search for a specific document. It is not an online catalogue for borrowing or reserving books, as the materials are available only for studying in the library premises.
The MS Excel book index is divided into two charts with either monographs or periodicals. The records are ordered sequentially and include following data: the press-mark, name of the document, name of the author and co-authors, place where published, the publisher, year when published, language, pages count and the ISBN number. In case of periodicals, the ISSN number is in the record, then the periodicity and the volume, year and library’s index number. The monographs chart is recorded on 48 sheets sorted out by the document's topic. The chart with periodicals contains three sheets with the magazines categorized according origin: Slovak, Czech and other foreign periodicals. The search function is available through the CTRL+F key shortcut. In case you want to search not only in the concrete sheet, but also in the whole document, change the Where setting to contain the document.
