Regional Convention on NATO – Prešov 2002

The aim of the Convention was to contribute to the public debate on Slovakia’s accession to NATO, to enable the citizens of the Eastern Slovakia region to obtain information on NATO’s tasks, on the problems and challenges related to international security and on the possibilities of Slovakia’s involvement in the North Atlantic security structures.

The Convention was attended by 18 personalities who presented their views on the importance of Slovakia’s accession to NATO, including Bruce Jackson, Chairman of the U.S. Committee on NATO, H.E. Magda Vášáryová, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to Poland, Peter Weiss, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Korčok, Director General of the International Organizations and Security Policy Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Karl F. Csensich, Vice President of U.S. Steel Košice, and prof. Juraj Stern, Vice-Rector of the University of Economics.

In this collection of contributions, the reader will find the views of people who deal with the topic of Slovakia’s accession to NATO on a daily basis in their work, the views of people living in the region of eastern Slovakia, as well as the views of foreign personalities who are helping Slovakia to build democracy and a market economy.

The publication also includes the Declaration of the Convention adopted by the participants, which calls for a responsible approach by politicians and citizens of Slovakia to decide its future.

We believe that this publication will contribute to the debate on Slovakia’s accession to NATO and will provide the reader with sufficient information on the various aspects of Slovakia’s accession to NATO.
